Studios: Weaving & Fibers

When i started out the new semester i was kinda sad because i wanted my break to last longer. When i actually got into going to my classes i was beyond excited when i went into my weaving and fibers class. Our first project we built our looms. Then we warped it (added the vertical yarn to the loom). By far this is my favorite class i have taken so far. I am excited to see what i can create in this class. while searching for fun fiber projects i stumbled on thewool and the gang blog. they have some amazing photos of fibers, weaving, and yarn. The shop is pretty amazing also (i wish i could afford some of that stuff because it would be amazing to knit!)

Instant Love

So i figured out what was wrong with my pictures. I had purchased the wrong film for my camera (yeah that would happen to me) At least the people at the impossible project have really great customerservice. The same day i emaild them they replied and we were able to figure the mess out. They were really amazing at finding out what my problem was.

here are some photos from the flickr group. just some photo inspiration.

Four Simple Goals: Revisited.

I am not going to lie i have progress troubles. I always find it hard to stick to my goals. So when i looked back at my four simple goals at the beginning of August I was shocked to see i actually stuck to them and actually completed them!

1. Be Myself
The whole first semester i was able to be myself. I was a house built on steady ground. The wind and waves didn't knock me down! I was able to say what i was feeling, share my faith, and even tell some people off when i need to stand up for myself. I was still the over caffeinated covered in paint and ink me and i didn't have to compromise who i was. I actually became better friends with people i never thought i would become friends with because of it!

2. Make Pieces That I Am Proud Of
This year taking three studios and coming up with original ideas for each of them was so difficult. But i actually did it! I made art i love and i am proud of. I ended up with 12 different prints and over 15 paintings i love. My professors loved them. They could tell i was giving it my all because i loved doing what i was doing! I will share more pics of them when i get better photos (Aka not cell pics)

3.Try not to look like a slob.
This one was a little hard. I tried to put more effort in how i looked. I wore more makeup and actually thought about what to wear for the proper weather conditions. But as the seasons changed and we got snowed in a couple times all i cared about was staying warm. So lets put this one in a "almost completed" column.

4.Enjoy what was left of the warm weather.
Oh my did I do that! I wore shorts and flip flops and hung out side till it got cooler out. When it gets cold in Erie, it gets freezing. so i enjoyed what i could.

Its good to go back and see the progress you did. I know i am way passed thrilled that i was actually able to stick to something and see it though!

Instant Love

So as you know i bought impossible project film.... my only problem is i don't know how much light is enough light. i started out using just sun light the picture came out dark.

then i used a spot light on a still life still really dark

then i used a better spot light its still pretty dark but you can see kinda everything in the photograph
(sorta!)

i did two shots with sun light and two spot lights.

i emailed the impossible project but no response yet. i don't understand how much is too much but clearly it isn't enough. it always also could be my camera to many variables.
(just so you know the scans actually look better then the Polaroids do in real life!)

on other instant love news i took a couple new photos with my instax wide!

(Jes took my portrait)

i took a picture of the sunrise the day looked optimistic little did i know.....

Erica

New Years Challenges!

I don't like the whole new years resolutions thing because lets face it no one i know ever sticks to them. I like to think of them more as challenges. Because challenges seem well.....more challenging and fun!

So my personal challenges for this upcoming new year are....

1. Take more just for fun pictures/photo shoots.

After taking a photo class for school and doing the projects we had to do kinda killed my passion for photography. (i also had a younger professor who still hadn't developed a teaching style yet.) i am getting back in the mood to take photos just for fun again and discovering the simple joys of a well taken accidental photograph!
(this was the last time i had a just for fun with friends photo shoot we were volunteering as clowns)

2. Find better ways to budget my time to get everything i need done.
I have crazy time management problems. i try to do lists and schedule my time but every time my projects seem to spill over into other projects times. so this year i will try my best to stay on task but not worry about not getting all things done.(just the most important ones done!)

3. Spend more time enjoying my city/ surroundings
My small town of Erie is well i don't even know how to explain it. its a town smack in the center of the old industrial area of the north west. so we have different terrains we have fresh water beaches & we have woodland areas. my goal is to spend more time out doors hiking trails, walking on beaches when the weather gets better.
(photo taken by Jes)

4.  Try not to spend money on unnecessary things
well as you may know or not i am kinda a shopaholic. I have tried to control my spending a bit this year but this time i really need control it. I would buy things that i really didn't need but really wanted. Now I know that's nooooo way to be spending money when your a college student. i need to be better about controlling what i need and what are wants.....(ill let you know how that goes!)

5. Have more fun doing just for fun crafts!
being an art student its really easy to get burnt out for great ideas to create work. i had three studios last semester and i just got so wiped out. i didn't take time out to do projects i wanted to do. So this year i will knit, embroider, paint, photograph, hot glue, bedazzle my own fun projects!
What are your new years challenges?

Peace & Love,
Erica
